Let me be more specific,  Scott, you are right about the  max cruising air
speed.  The green arc on the ASI defines the normal range for max cruising
speed.

This is from actual experience with the FAA MAN.  My craft was in an
avionics shop getting repairs.  An FAA examiner poored over my plane saw the
green arc extending above 180 Knots, saw the 3 inch letters and grounded the
plane with the apropriate citations because I had not complied with the
FARs. I had to get a ferry permit to take it home. During that trip I made
some runs at 23, 24 and 25 inches MP at about 7500 msl and all three runs
indicated were less than 180 knots.  the last was luckily 179kts at 25
inches.  So I logged the entries and did the previous stuff in my last
e-mail hand carried the paperwork directly to the FAA office and gave them
to "another" inspector who was very understanding and he said "Case Closed".
I consider myself lucky.  He also said it would be a shame to destroy such a
beautiful graphic scheme with 12 inch numbers.  So guys, beware and act
accordingly.  If you want the small numbers you better have the rest of your
numbers in line or you too will be grounded someday.
