There are lots of alternatives out there to the enclosed self-reflected
50-100 watt halogens that were discussed before.  I'm certain that the
reflector-equipped 50-55 watters will be more than adequate for recognition
lights (I could see the light disk at the other end of the shop, 40 feet
away, when tested during daylight hours), but think that more penetration
and intensity is in order for landing and taxi lights...  there is a
projector style fog lamp which uses a standard H-3 halogen bulb available
out there, with a focusing lens up front and a reflector built into the
housing.  The unit as provided from sources such as JC Whitney includes a
standard 55watt H3 bulb, but a 130 watt replacement lamp is available for
just a few bucks, and would undoubtedly more than suffice to light up the
runway/taxiway as required.  Request a catalog from
http://www.jcwhitney.com and look on p58 for the lamp units (#81KX1058R or
1059X)(4" long x 3" diameter), and p60 for the replacement lamps
(#12KX3254W).  Your local speed/off-road shop might also have all these
parts in stock as well.

Just remember that 130w is an 11amp load at 12 volts, and is going to
generate considerable heat... even the 50 watters get too hot to hold in
just a few moments.   I think some ventilation would be in order if these
things are going to be buried in the wingtips.
