Skip has a good point here. The B&C starter weighs about a pound more than
the Sky-Tec, but seems to be much more robust. If I were buying one from
scratch I'd buy the B&C unit. Here's a case where the extra pound is worth
it.
However, my factory-new Lycoming IO-360 (not intending to brag here -- I'm in
hock up to my ears for it...) came with a factory-new Sky-Tec starter so I'm
going to use that. FYI, it turns out that there's some bad blood between B&C
and Lycoming. I won't get into it here -- I don't even know the details
anymore -- but Lycoming's issue with the B&C unit is related to
personalities, not engineering characteristics.
The Sky-Tec guys told me that their unit ships with an attached starter
solenoid, which Lycoming ignores by electrically bypassing it, even though it
stays attached to the starter. What this means is if you have a Sky-Tec
starter you already have a starter solenoid. Swap the wiring to the Sky-Tec
starter and you don't need a separate starter solenoid -- use the one you
already have.
