Just doing the annual inspection on my L320 and noticed that the pinion gear
on the starter can be moved laterally about 1/16 inch. I am not sure how

I can't help you with the Lycoming starter but my O-320-D1F starter went bad and I had it replaced with a Sky Tec starter. This starter really does turn the engine a lot faster.
