I am not sure how much slop is acceptable but if not attended to, the pinion could eventually start slipping on the starter ring gear and destroy it. I have a few questions for anyone who can help. 1. Can someone tell me how much lateral movement is acceptable? 2. What is the normal repair procedure for this problem? 3. Is there a repair kit available for the starter so that I could replace the worn bushing? 4. Can I buy just the gear box that is attached to the starter? 5. Do I have to replace the entire starter? The starter is a Lycoming light weight starter which was on the factory new Lycoming O-320-D1F which I purchased from Neico Aviation, shipped 2/4/91. Any help would be appreciated. If you can not find the answers to my questions perhaps you can provide a contact at Lycoming.
