In our lightning lab we mount some of our parts on wood and fiberglass that is Formica covered.  To prevent crushing the wood laminate or fiberglass, we use large oversize "body washers".  These are thin, flat washers that cover a surface area 2-3 times the normal surface area of flat washers.  This allows proper tightening while distribuing the forces over a very large surface area hence reducing the local pressure that can cause cracks, etc.
