Experimental Plane Crashes Near Fernandina Beach

By First Coast News Staff

ST. MARY'S, Ga -- A two seat experimental plane went down off the coast of
St. Marys Georgia early Tuesday afternoon. The plane, a Lancair 360, was
making its way to St. Augustine from Savannah when it experienced problems.

The Savannah air tower placed a call to the Fernandina Airport letting them
know that the aircraft may be coming in for an emergency landing. However,
the plane fell off of radar contact around the St. Mary's area at roughly
11am. It was about 11.5 miles north east of Fernandina Beach when it
disappeared.

The Savannah Cost Guard Air Station then dispatched an aircraft to search
for debris. However, a Navy P-3 reported that it had found a debris field
approximately at 11:15am. The debris field was located 6-7 miles north-east
from the coast of Fernandina Beach. The Coast Guard assumed that the debris
found was that of the missing Lancair plane.

The Coast Guard believe that the physical nature of the debris field
indicates that the plane experienced a hard crash into the sea.

At around 2pm Tuesday afternoon the Coast Guard reported that they had
recovered a body of an adult male from the water.

The body that was retrieved has not been identified yet but has been sent to
the Jacksonville Coroner's Office for identification.

The aircraft is registered to a Eugene Johannesmeyer, who may or may not
have been the pilot at the time of the crash.
