Bill,
I didn't have room for the Mazda alternator in its original location, but the
little Geo unit fit very nicely.
Here's another possibility... Last week I stumbled across a company that makes a
water pump/alternator combo for small block Fords. The alternator windings
were hidden under the wp pulley. Its made by a company in S. Calif. for the
street rod crowd. I will have to search and see if I can locate some info on
it, if you're interested.
I had another idea the other day after Tracy pointed out that you could turn an
alternator either direction. Do you have room to turn the second alternator
around (pointing forward), change the pulley to a smooth idler-type, and drive
it off the back side of the existing belt. Set it up like an idler would be
done.
