Yes, Perry, the impression such a climbout
makes is hard to convey with words - but, it sort of leaves you with your
jaw hanging open. I've been satisfied with my climbout rate, but heavily
loaded on hot, high altitude density days and short grass strips always left me
wishing I had a few more feet between me and the tree tops that whistled

I just happened to think that since with the 2.85
gears, the rpm band will be moved approx 1000 rpm higher that may greatly aid
the mechanics of the DIE variable length manifold. I had to cut approx 2"
off my desired design length to get this one to fit under the cowl and was
thinking I would have to design a lower manifold to drop the base down a couple
of inches to regain that length. But, now with a higher rpm band that
automatically shortens the required length.

Well, 'bout ready to place my order for my
Monster 76/88 prop from Performance Propellers. Tracy's is 74/88 but
he feels that with the 2.85 even longer diameter props can be
accommodated. If too much prop, Clark Lydick will trim the
diameter. So will ship my RD-1B to Tracy to have it converted to a
2.85 RD-1C after I finish attending a couple more flyins in May. Hard
to get his "vertical" take off out of my mind.

I know how you feel Ed. I saw
Mike Melville do a similar climb out in his IO360 Long-Ez at Rutan's bday
party. Very impressive.
