Could we say that a "pressurized old Mazda/newer Ford" expansion tank fills both functions, "purge" and "expansion"? The picture you mention - was it of a long shiney box mounted fore & aft on side of engine compartment? It and your expansion tank are both pressurized? With the [air] "purge" function separated from the pressurized "expansion tank", the "purge" box must be the equivalent of Lynn Hannover's "swirl pot" that he's referred to many times.
