That's fine when the engine's apart, Finn. I don't think I want the metal to go into the block.
Looks like another trip to the machine shop - or can you buy these barbs from Mazda?
 
I tried the Mazda dealer, and they said I would have to buy the complete housing. I also tried Mazdatrix and 4 or 5 other suppliers. They all told me the same. Mazdatrix removed a used one for me, and sold it to me for 5 dollars plus shipping. Problem was that it was so distorted from pulling it out of the housing, it was unuseable. Really out of round.  So, my machinist made one for me that fit like a glove. He made it from a steel 5/8 heater hose nipple that had a 1/2"NPT on the opposite end. (CarQuest) worked great, and less machining because one end was already a 5/8 inch heater nipple with the raised rib on it.  Just had to turn the other end down for a 17mm press fit.  Take care.
