I just found a stock manual trans flywheel off a 13B non-turbo I disassembled many years ago. It's 11 3/4" dia to outside of the teeth, just like the aluminum one I just bought. The 13B flex plate (which fits the drive) is 12 5/8" diameter.

While typing this on my hangar computer using (hated) gmail web interface, I saw Dave's post, which confirms what I suspected about diameters.  Thanks, Dave; that saved me lots of digging.

Fortunately, I don't need to change from the flexplate at the moment, but I wonder about simply milling the adapter plate to position the starter 7/16" closer to centerline......

Thanks to Kelly for the offer, but it looks like the size mystery is solved.

Charlie, I have one of Lou Ross’s PSRUs and I was surprised when converting over to Tracy’s PSRU to find that the diameter of the Ross flywheel was 1” smaller in diameter – didn’t realize this until I stuck the starter into the Tracy mount and found it’s drive gear was approx 1/2” away from the teeth on the flywheel.  So had to ditch it and go find a more recent version.

Hmm... this is curious. The seller says 'fits 86-91', so that should be 2nd gen. I wonder if the turbo flywheel is larger diameter (same diameter as the flexplate). Guess I'll call Fidanza & ask, before I contact the seller.

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to just move the starter closer to the e-shaft centerline to match the smaller flywheel? (I do have mine mounted on the plugs side of the engine).

I don't really expect to need this flywheel, but if it's useable, I'll hang on to it.

Thanks for the help,

Charlie

I bought 2 aluminum racing flywheels for RX-7, one new and One used.   Both were same diameter as 2nd gen flex plate although the seller said they also fit RX-8.

I am not familiar with the " FB or FC " terminology.   I'm wondering if they mean it is a 1st gen RX7.   I would assume FC means 2nd gen since 3rd gen is FD.

Well, I recently bought a used aluminum flywheel with the following description:

Quote:
RX7 8.5Lb Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel for FB or FC
For sale is a 8.5lb Aluminum Fidanza Flywheel for a RX7 Non Turbo , its used and could use a new friction plate
fits 86-91 Non turbo RX7s might fit Fb 2nd gen RX7s as well i'm not 100% sure
Unquote.

It was reasonably priced, since I don't need the wear surface, so I figured it would be 'plan B' if I ever have an issue with the flex plate.

When it arrived (yesterday, after everyone was gone), I sat it on top of my (cracked) flex plate, and it's almost an inch smaller in diameter. The mounting holes in the center seem to line up properly. I remember reading about milling the drive plate to move the starter .2" closer to the engine, but I don't remember anything about the smaller diameter.

So, my questions:
Did I purchase the wrong item, would I simply make my starter cutout in the plate closer to the centerline to account for the smaller diameter, or was the flywheel mis-represented?

If it's not the described item, I need to send it back, but I don't want to bother the seller if I simply bought the wrong flywheel.

Thanks,

Charlie
