Thanks, Steve. I've got a 304 stainless bend that I'll be welding to the manifold, & could have sworn that I read online to use 308L rod for stainless to mild steel, but I can only find one reference now, & it's on a welding forum where someone says it's 'ok'. I'll try to find some 309L or some 347 when I go to the welding shop this week.

Charlie,

I don't know what alloy Mazda used.  When I welded that layer to itself or to 321 with a Tig torch, I used 347 rod.  I haven't had problems with the welds, but don't have a lot of time on that assembly.  I don't think a rod for regular steel would be a good choice.  The Burns Stainless website has a good discussion of welding stainless and that is where I purchased the rod and flux.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Renesis exhaust manifold material?

Anyone know for sure the type of metal used for the 'middle layer' of
the Renesis exhaust manifold? Not the bolt-on heat shield, but the outer
welded layer that's about 0.1" thick. A magnet grabs it tightly, but it
doesn't seem to rust, so that makes me think it might be some form of
low grade stainless.

I've got some 308L rod that's supposed to be good for welding stainless
to itself and to regular steel, but I need to weld an area of the outer
metal to itself, & don't know whether to use the 308 or a rod for
regular steel.

Thanks,

Charlie
