I had a similar troublesome idle with my firs= t engine ('88 S4 rotors) especially when hot but it never quit while airbor= ne. After switching to the '89 S5 rotors I thought I'd detect slightly mor= e power (9.7:1 (S5) Vs 9.4:1 (S4)) but the only noticeable outcome was a sm= oother idle - I guess it was breathing better at low rpms with the increase= d compression. My engine will have a random but freque= nt miss below 1600 rpm. I have the e shaft oil jet mod and would see <27= psi at idle and 65 psi at high rpm. I replaced the stock 2004 renesis regulator with a racing beat 98 psi regulator. I now see about 32 = psi at idle and 85-90 psi at full power.
