Any homebuilt can be registered as a self-launch glider.
It doesn't need long wings.
 
Although not homebuilt, SpaceShipOne is an experimental motor glider. 
Same rules apply.

I liked the bigger wing area they used on the -14.   It no doubt cost some top speed and cruise  but I love the additional wing I added on my -8.   Instead of a rock,  It feels like it wants to keep flying when the throttle is chopped.   Guess I should'a been a glider pilot.
