My radiator is not discharging into the cowling, so there is not a connection. I did another test run with the inlet around the prop flange taped almost shut, and the engine sputtering did not come back. This would indicate to me there is a connection. Either with pressure or some sort of turbulence.

If its cooling well I wouldn't be so quick to call it a big mistake.
