I've gotten into this discussion lately - but, perhaps we are a bit premature in solving the problems of Laser ignition.  From what I read in the news report was:

The suggestion that the laser ignition system could make an appearance in the new rotary comes after a comment made by a senior engineer at Mazda. He said the upcoming rotary sports car would use a “special kind of ignition system”. This special ignition is expected to be applied to Mazda’s latest rotary engine development, an engine dubbed the 16X Renesis.

I see no reference in the quote of this senior Mazda engineer to "Laser Ignition" but only to a "special kind of ignition system".  I think "special" leaves a lot of room for things other than a "Laser" .

How about a capacitive discharge system which to my knowledge has not been used by Mazda in the rotary?  Would this not be a "Special" kind - compared to previous types?

Would an piezoelectric ceramic igniter be "special"?

Special ignition systems for alternative fuel engines?

Enhanced Plasma  ignition?.

My point is -  has anyone seen anything substantiating Mazda's intended use of a Laser ignition other than someone's interpretation of what a senior engine said (and who did not use the term laser)?

Just give me the 16X even with  a non-special ignition!! {:>)
