I have seen that as a problem with carbureted engine, but fuel injected typically if running correctly stays pretty clean from what I have seen. there is some build up, but minimal. Not too sure how long the lens for the laser would stay clear to keep it operable. Seems like a viable idea. You may have much less build-up if you have a more consistent and complete fuel burn. I suppose they could be using special coatings to prevent buildup from becoming a problem.

If you've got a film building up on the rotor housing's chrome face, aren't you behind the curve already? I could see
it being a problem in a piston cylinder's head. I've had to chip off gunk with a screwdriver it had built up so thick.
But they aren't constantly being wiped by an apex seal like in a rotary.
