The oil metering pump can easily be modified to use oil from an external reservoir.  A photo of how I did this is in the archives.  Search for "oil metering pump" and check messages from me.  This pump modification has worked fine for me for over 250 hours and averages a little less than one ounce of oil per gallon of fuel.

Steve, I'll check that out. 
I'm not concerned about running out of 2-Cycle oil on a flight due to taking off with an empty reservoir.  I do a pretty thorough pre-flight.
