Here's the concept for the pump impeller- I work as a firefighter and this is a the same concept as our fire pumps. First of all the water goes from the center (the eye) of the pump outward. the impeller throws the water outward, using centrifugal force to force the water into the outer portion of the pump (the volute). Since the water is thrown outward, it creates a suction behind it which pulls in more water to the eye of the pump.

Simple and powerful.  A typical fire pump impeller looks like a vented disc brake rotor and is about 12 inches in diameter and about 2 inches thick IIRC. it can pump 1000 gallons a minute at 150 psi.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Impellor Rotation Direction

Why do I get the feeling these impellors are being turned in the wrong direction?
Image 1 is a scan of a test engine … from my cockpit the prop turns clockwise and so does the e-shaft with an RD1-C -  as referenced to this scanned image.

Now look at these water pump impellors … if I wanted to move water I’d cup my hand and scoop it, not use the back of my hand.
Has Mazda got this wrong? Or am I missing something?

It looks like I’ll have to change the water pump, as the flange may be warped and the thread bosses are definitely burred.
