Not sure I interpreted your message correctly, but if you can run for 15 minutes on the ground and only see 170-180F - but, I don't think you have a problem.  If I run above 5000 rpm my temps will hit those ranges inside a minute or two.  Now reduced power I can run longer, but the temps still slowly climb.
 
On the other hand using a "Laser" gun remoted temperature sensor is measuring the external temps - what are your cooling and oil temps under those conditions?

Still having coolant & oil temp readings problem, am trying to work them out, temps are being read by lazer temp gun at different locations, max temps seen aprox. 170 to180 F  after aprox 15 min. run.                                    David R. Cook  RV6A Rotary

RV6A,  1140#,  13B, RWS EC2, EM2, -B-drive 2.17 to 1 ?  with 20" intake runners,  home made Dynamic Chamber w/curved back,  3" throttle-body from 2000 Cadillac Deville Northstar  4.6L eng.,  exhaust aprox. 2" into  3" X 36" into Hushpower muff.,  standard Cleveland brakes from Vans Aircraft,  at 4700 rpm & aprox. 26 MAP,  I can not hold the aircraft from moving unless I tie it off to my truck & I can go higher in power.      David R.
