Here is an extract from an NACA study on ducts and the effects of heat exchanger cores in a duct and factors important to both.  I put a few notes on the side in which I attempt to interpret the significance of some of the findings.  But, in my opinion, this  it really summarizes what is important in cooling duct design for our applications better than anything else I have found.

Here is what he said about them..

Cooling is working OK and when I install the bellmouth inlet rings on the inlets I think it will be in final form.   Right now I have what amounts to 5" pitot tubes sticking out of the cowl for inlets.   Not good at high angle of attack in climb

He just expanded the diameter by 1/4 to 1/2" if I remember correctly. They are still round.

Did anyone happen to get a picture of Tracy’s plane at SNF that would show what he has done to modify/improve his cooling inlets?  I am in the “design/invent” mode to try and improve my cooling and I would really appreciate some ideas that work.

Anyone seen it that could describe the changes?  Anything would help!   :>)
