OK, I give up.
If you have to take off a front case:
Start by applying tension to the crank shaft forcing it to the front of the
engine (not the airplane) so as to trap the rear thrust bearing against the
thrust plate.
So, in the event that the thrust spacer slides out along the crank as you
remove the pulley (often the case)
the rear thrust bearing cannot slip down and hang on the crank to be
crushed by the spacer on reassembly.
I use bungee cords as it is a simple thing to hook around the edge of the
starter ring and find spots on the engine to hook the other end. If the engine
is in the car, push the clutch pedal down and place a length of broom stick
between the seat and the pedal to hold it down. For automatics, take off the
dust cover and pound in a tight fitting chunk of wood between the
transmission face and the torque converter.
Do not forget that block of wood is there...................
PS:
The USA not counting offshore or Alaska has more oil than all of the worlds
oil producing countries combined, except for Canada, which shares the Bakken
formation with us. And very little of Canada has been explored. At current
consumption rates that will last but another 2,000 years.
To have our necks on the Saudi chopping block hoping the oil flow is
never cut off is suicidal. When the fanatics win over there, we will never see
another drop of Mid East oil. Imagine this winter in the North East with no home
heating oil and no diesel for standby power for hospitals or shelters. No diesel
for snow plows.
No way to evacuate Millions? of people. But that could never happen.
Back to saving the Snail Darter and my last comments on oil.
