Ok, let me see if I have this correct, or at least can explain my understanding. mode 1- you move the program knob it all the way clockwise, push the program button, and you can get a full rich mixture. Move it all the way counter-clockwise, push the program button and you get it all the way lean.
Mode 9- move the program knob in the desired direction, push the program button, and you get an incremental change in the direction of the program knob movement, regardless of amount of knob movement, just the direction, ie, lean or rich. It would only move the value a couple of digits on the programing screen leaner or richer, depending on the direction of know movement. Or alternatively, move the know to 9 oclock and push the program button to get a small increment of leaning, or 3 oclock for richer. The amount of adjustment would be dependant on number of program button pushes.
Is that about the gist of it?

Mode 1 adjusts the mixture in a ‘bigger’ step. When you put the mixture at 3 o’clock to make it run better, and then set the program knob to 3 o’clock and push store, it makes a correction that is supposed to take it all the way to stoichiometric. Doing this in the air could be hazardous to your drawers, you might take it to a setting where the engine quits.
Mode 9 is incremental adjustments. setting the program knob rich or lean and pushing the store button moves it a ‘little way ‘ in the preferred direction, need more – push again. Much safer for inflight adjustments.
Tracy can probably explain this better, but that is my understanding.

I think I have uncovered the glitch making my engine run like crap- the solid wires on the back of the cold start switch got smooshed together thereby making the engine run too rich all the time. Have not had time to get into the panel and correct it, but when I run the engine, and put sideways pressure on the switch, the engine smooths out. So, I'll check on those wires when I get up to the airport tomorrow.
Hope that this is the cause for my rough running- This engine/airframe combination promises to be a real nice combination.
Also I have a question- mode 5 is not used, at least in my version (circa 2006). Is there any use for it in later versions?
Another question- mode 9 differs from mode 1 in what respect? I've re-read the manual but don't see what the difference is.
