 It's mounted in the side of the sump.
The float switch sends the wire to ground if the oil gets low. I've found that the light comes on at about 1 qt below normal - presuming you're not loosing oil fast for some reason, this gives you lots of time to land and top it up.

When I blew my stock turbo a few years ago (and oil began leaking from the bearing generating a pretty smoke trail) the oil light came on about 15 minutes before landing.  There were about 2 qts of oil ( and 2 apex seals) missing after shutdown. :)
