First off a GREAT BIG THANKS!! to all the Tailwind drivers who took me for flights and let me handle the controls. This morning the conditions were near perfect, so a moment of solitude with the maker, I climbed in and said, self this is the moment of truth. First flight in a Tailwind was with Brian Alley at Urbana, 2001, and my much younger mind which absorbed the pattern and final approach like a sponge and even today it was like it happened yesterday. Malcolm and BobD in different flights, gave me lots of pointers, there was a joke at one time that I had more time in Tailwinds than some of the owners.
I do need a 2.5 to 1 redrive, as the engine needs to turn faster to develop the hp. I need to get the engine up to 6200 rpm to develop over 200 hp, but for now I'm really happy. It is very stable, controls are very sensitive compared to the Colt. With 4 notches of flaps the approach was too hot at 85, but on the uphill grass runway the roll out was about 500 feet
estimated hp 135 - 145
engine rpm 5600
prop rpm 2800
speed 163
MAP 28.5
OAT 76
PF ample
water temp 190
oil temp 190 I think my muffler is blocking the cowl outlet to some extent
fuel press 42
exhaust temp 1600
I will be sawing half the brake pedals off, as it is too hard to taxi with the rudder with out riding the brakes. It doesn't want to lift off well with the wheels sliding down the runway.
