today I pulled all the plugs and my DIS system
apart. the engine runs rough/starts hard and the timing light only
flashed on some wires[yes, I had the clip in the right direction].
however, I was able to get a spark [visually with plugs removed] on all the
plugs[using all 3 ignitions systems I have for lead/trailing plugs], even tho'
the timing light didn't flash all the time. I tried switching wires and
some wires will trigger the timing light, some won't, even tho' the plugs were
firing.
my DIS pick-ups were easily triggered by passing
a screwdriver blade past them. the spec'd .08" gap seems ridiculous when
.125" is more than sufficient.
testing continuity of the wires was odd.
volt meter would beep once, then stop, whereas holding the probes together
creates a constant beeping. perhaps a high resistance wire does
this?
since I built the DIS ignition, and my engine
won't go past 1500rpm, I first suspected the ignition has problems.
however, the pick-ups all seem to work, I put new plugs in, I visually saw them
sparking. perhaps it is a fuel pressure issue, since I still haven't
installed a fuel pump and have, like, .93 psi to the carb. maybe the
timing light doesn't work with these plug wires [blue silicon, spiral wound -
originally used with Jeff rose elect ignition on my Lycoming] and is confusing
me [altho it seems like it should work or not work, why would some wires trigger
it and some not?] any ideas? should I buy new wires and start
over?
