Yes, that's the heater core outlet, Paul. I've come across a few fittings which are "push fit" like that. (oil filler cap, turbo water input/output, etc. etc.) Input I'm getting says that the push fit fittings are fine, but they make me a bit uncomfortable too. I'd be interested in anyone elses opinion about this.
 
As for what to do with it, I had a small one like this. I had a small plate welded on the end to seal it, then hammered it back in.
Any suggestions for a better way would be welcome.

 John, I think press-in are OK for low pressure things like coolant.  But, I would be more hesitant if there were 80 psi of oil pressure on the other side.
