It must be presumed that every cooler is contaminated all of the time. Furnace brazing debris is common in new coolers. Bits of hose and engine assembly sealer are next most often.
 
The filter should always be the last thing the oil sees before the oil gets to the bearings.
 
That is a real filter, like a K&N not a (Gag) Fram. K&N has high flow rates more media, lower pressure drop, steel center tube and 350 to 500 pound burst cans. Available for any engine application or remote filter stand.
