Excellent suggestion Lynn. In my opinion very likely that is the problem. Perhaps room for idler to increase belt wrap?

It may be the case that the alternator as installed is of a higher output than the one that came on the chassis the motor home is built on. So, let us suppose that it is the case, and now the single sheave pulley is no longer adequate, and a two sheave pulley is required. Also, it is possible that the layout does not provide as much wrap (contact area) for the belt(s) as is required and is just overheating them.  
 
So, add a sheave, and increase the pulley size about 30% for more wrap and lower belt stress (bending angle) and tensile load. No more problems.
