The rotary powered Grumman had been around awhile. You can legally (with FAA approval) put a non-certified engine in a certified aircraft in a special "experimental" category ( of which there are 5 or 6 categories). However, that classification generally expires after 1 year and can not be renewed and the aircraft must be restored to its certified configuration before it can continue to fly. This special category is generally not permitted to land and take off except from its home base. But, if you have a FAA official that is willing to sign off putting it in the Amateur Built Experimental category, then I presume you are OK. I would certainly check the status of registration with the FAA before I would purchase it.
