I use an Earls stintered bronze filter downstream from my pumps.  You are
right that they clog.  every 100 hrs or so I start to notice a decrease in
the overall flow rate, then maybe a small drop in pressure.  The element
always looks perfectly clean, but I just give it a good cleaning and it is
good for another 100 hrs.
