OK, that calls for plan "B". Just mount the pivot rod on top of the folded flat stock at the bolt head. Adjust the height to gain the best feel and full throw. Shifter can be anywhere along the shaft. The opposite end of the pivot rod can be mounted on a cover plate over the old shifter location, or anywhere ahead or behind the new shifter. The "H" pattern will be reversed left to right. But after three laps even my driver figured it out.

A picture is worth a 1000 word for sure.  As depicted, the lower part
of the strap would interfere with the transmission housing.  I didn't
take a picture of my transmission, but found a similar photo on ebay.
Any way to solve this problem?
