Ed,

It is hard to beat $5 each.  Tapp wasn’t too bad at all on the radiator though.  The radiator itself was $375 plus shipping.  I just got back fro the airport.  I tore out the old evaporator cores and fiberglass plenum.  The new radiator is too big to fit the way Intended.  The actual radiator, as I found out, is actually 15.75 by 22.75.  Slightly larger than the dimensions I gave them, but even at 22” it wouldn’t go in as I intended to mount it.

I’m going to have to mount it more horizontal.  By relocating the fuel filters and fuel pumps, I can get about a 30 degree angle, and enough spacing to get a diffuser built that should do a good job of air distribution.  The bad news is that I won’t be able to put the cooling fan in as I planned for ground operation.  I’ll have to come up with a different plan for it.

Regards,

Steve Brooks

Ok, Steve, that gives 852 cubic inches, so that should provide more than adequate core for cooling.

I keep saying I should swap out my old GM Freon Evaporator cores for real radiators designed for coolant flow - I have to believe there would be an improvement.  However, each time the $700-$900 price tag rears its ugly head - especially given that I now have over 10 years flying time on the two $5 GM cores and no cooling problems.

Ed,

Tapp Inc, in Sophia, NC made the radiator, and the core is 2.5” thick /

Nice looking work, Steve.  Where did you have it make? What is its thickness?

Here is a photo of the new radiator.  15.5” X 22” overall  - Double pass – end tank is not very big – about an inch.  Keeps the core as large as possible.
