Dave, that is essential the set up that I have. I do have a crowbar type
circuit breaker poper for the field coil. I am told by some that
interrupting the field voltage may not disable the alternator (internal
regulator), but if I pull the field coil CB the voltage drops from 14 volts
to around 12.8 volts (battey voltage level) and my alternator low voltage
light comes on. So with the alternator I have killing voltage to the field
coil does appear to cut alternator output. Your milage may vary.

I have decided to bite the bullet and install separate alternator
contactor
(Solenoid) which is triped by an over voltage sensor ala. Aeroeletric
connection..
