Greg,
Yep! Kadafi is a good guy now - so they say!
On their Pilots - nothing you could say would surprises me, but it's interesting to hear about it.
Oh for the good old days. I hope things get better before they get much worse.

Yeah George they had their own oil until Kadafi took over and nationalized it all. We actually gave the King (Idris) their first air force, a couple of olllllld C-47's, and a couple of T-33's. Should have seen their stateside trained pilots trying to figure out how to get the canopies open.........they kept tripping on their baggy pants, getting up the ladder.....(:-)

I'll go you one or two better. Wheelus AFB, Tripoli, Libya, 1965. Gas
tanked in from the U.S. $ .15c per gallon. A quart of 30-WT oil, $.22c, Pack of Salems, $ .15 per pack, $1.40 per carton. Quart of Jack Daniels at the Class VI store, $1.96. We used to go to Italy with a suit case load of cigarettes on leave, and live like kings, guess what a hotel room in Rome, or Naples goes for now?

Greg,
Libya - not fair!! Don't they have their own oil ?
I can quote Vietnam 68 US PX prices too but that wouldn't be fair either. Mind you we didn't have to pay for fuel there and then - it was all free, fuel, food, guns and bullets, green clothing, packs, you name it was all free.
There were a couple of things we had to pay for- a can of beer was 15c and a goffer (soft drink) was 5c. But I can't remember if that was Military currency or the conversion rates.
Yep! the good old days!! Try and get a goffer for 5c now!

Lynn and Bill,
I googled it, which I should have done initially and some sites stated it had been around for about 30 years. I guess they didn't really need it then. I tell my Son, back in 1967 I remember getting fuel for 5 cents a liter or 20 cents a gallon - he can't believe it. I guess that's 40 years ago, but you know what I mean. Does anyone remember what it cost in the US in 1967.
I was pumping "regular" for ~$0.26 per gallon then. "100 Octane" (about 93 by today's standards) was $.0.30.
Keep in mind, that at that time, rent for three bedroom home was ~$55 per month, not the $1100 it is now, in the outer reaches of the greater Phoenix area. A pound of ground round - what? 12% fat? - was $0.39. A brand new Colt m1911 was 125.00, as opposed to the ~$800 it is now. A half gallon of milk? Well, you know where this goes ...
