Due to the lack of rain over the past months, the flying weather here in North Carolina has been outstanding.  Days after days with no clouds or rain (unless you plan on flying to Shady Bend of course), a little wind and turbulence at times, but great flying weather.

We are on the downwind side of Charlotte and it appears that clouds and low ceilings hang on much longer than else where around here - when we have them.

Got in a flight last weekend with my 10 year old grandson.  I took him to a pancake breakfast which I thought would bore him, but all the old characters there really knew how to entertain a young boy.

Now he wants to go to a fly-in with airshows, jet propelled 18 wheelers, etc.  So I'll probably take him to the Mid-Atlantic flyin next year (provide he has not found more entertaining things to do).

Al, I can tell you, looking out the door doesn't always work either. I live 10 miles from the airport, but it is next to the Susquehanna River in PA. I live just over a mile from the river, but over a slight hill. We can have beautiful sunny weather here in the morning, but when I get over the hill----FOG.
The airport can even be fogged in when the area upstream is clear. It seems there is just enough of a ridge across the river from the airport to keep the fog there while a few miles away the sky is clear.
Yep, flying is fun!

I live about 35 miles from the airport where my plane is; and because of the terrain, it’s a bit of a different climate zone.

I was going to fly today with a friend.  At 8:00 this morning (decision time) the forecast (NOAH, ADDS and intellecast) was for about 15 mph NNE wind, gusts to 24.  Single runway 09-27, with hills to the north that cause all sorts of turbulence with north winds.  So we decided not to go.  Actual conditions until 11:00 a.m.: 3-5 variable.  At 11:00 oclock the forecasts were for 8-10 NNW.  Actual at 1:00 p.m; 8 at 290.  Altogether perfect day to fly.

A week ago, similar plan.  FSS briefer forecast limiting overcast until noon, broken at 01:00 p.m.  Plan canceled.  By 9:30 the sky at the airport was clear, visability 8 miles – too late to change the plan.

Just be thankful if live close enough to your airplane where you can look out your door and decide if you like the conditions.
