Ah, for old eye balls, this photo
does indeed make the transformation much more meaningful. I just couldn't
see the difference - perhaps not looking closely enough. But, this photo
does show the change much better.
From what I can see (loaded
statement), it does not appear that the process affected the bearing material -
is that your assessment?
Now is the process would only
work for taking carbon off {:>)
Thanks Monty, very
impressive.

Well, I was going to say something about taking old
one eye to the optometrist, but that would be tacky. ;-)
Actually since the solution is caustic and a
detergent, and the little hydrogen bubbles are created at the interface of the
good metal, it does take off the carbon and grease pretty well.
It still works best if you degrease the
part first.
The process did not seem to hurt the bearings.
I was not very careful with the bearings, as this
was nothing more than an experiment and I really had no hope for the situation.
Having dealt with rusted things all my life, I
would have sworn that this was boat anchor material, but the seals and
springs actually look OK. I am actually thinking of putting together a test bed
motor out of this one! I will have to locate a set of used RX8 rotor housings to
make that worth my while.
If I were Catholic I would send that last pic
to the Pope as evidence of a bona fide miracle. I may resurrect
this derelict after all.
