Russell,

The wastegate on my 89 (S5) RX-7's turbo cracks right around 5.5 PSI.  The higher (than S4, being 86-88) boost is attained with an ECU controlled solenoid which bleeds pressure from the signal line between the compressor and the wastegate actuator.  Porting the wastegate is -usually- a workable way for the RX-7's to prevent boost from creeping beyond the desired level, but I have heard of some cars with free-flowing exhaust still creeping beyond the set point during periods of extended load (ie accelerating in higher gears).
