Rich, good questions, but like many of the choices we in alternative engines face,  there is no yes/no, good/bad- just another risk factor  with pros and cons to consider.  I believe that there is some technical merit to using an electrical water pump such as reducing pumping HP losses, perhaps less weight, optimum coolant temp control, etc. . You could also factor in your water  pump current load into your overall power considerations and run with a larger battery to get you your minimum alternator-out time.  But, I must admit that I find the reliability and no need for attention mechanical pump preferable for myself.
 
Me?, I'm waiting for a pizeo electric ignition system and a  mechanical fuel pump and then I can throw the battery away  {:>).

I have a potential safety question with using an electric pump, unless the engine is using a magneto.
 
The ignition system runs on battery/alternator power. If it and the FI are run by an ECU, it too needs power. The fuel pumps need electricity. There are other electric hungry mechanism that need power.
 
In an alternator/battery failure (short of having dual alt and batt) to have a water pump sucking 5 or more amps of power, this significantly shortens the available flight time before engine stoppage.
 
If the engine is magnitoed, when the electrons disappear and the pump stops, all that will happen is that the engine will fry---- The result will be the same
