Hi George,
I like Permatex Ultra Gray myself but the problem may be technique rather than the material.   I once used red high temp RTV when I was out of Gray with no problems.   Any excess usually squeezes out and remains as a small ring on the inside of the drive.  I've never seen it break loose in an amount that could plug an oil filter.  How much are you using?   It only takes a little to do the job.  The total amount used to install the drive should be insufficient to plug an oil filter.

As I recall, you have a separate oil system for your drive.  Do you also have a separate pressure gauge?  (highly recommended if anyone decides to do this).  If the oil pressure was still OK, there is no chance that this caused any drive damage.  The sun gear would be the most likely to show signs of distress but also check the planet gears for signs of abnormal needle bearing play.

To: Tracy Crook,

My gearbox oil filter was plugged up with red high temp RTV
that I used to seal my RD-1A gearbox.

I have it apart, and it looks fine internally, would you suggest Permatex
or some other gasket sealant?

Thank you,

George Graham
