Why do we keep an oil feed to the re-drive instead of filling it with 90 weight?

Bob;

Cooling.  The friction losses in the planetary at continuous high power would overheat the oil.  The “towing package” on most any pick-up or van likely includes a trans oil cooler (did on my Dodge van).  Most (I think) autos with higher powered engines (again, mine does) have a trans oil cooing loop that is either part of the rad, or in the lower (return) rad tank.
