I replaced the old hydraulic fluid with a fairly new formulation of brake fluid made for the military to lower the fire hazards in aircraft. It is generally referred to by its military specification number MIL-H-83282A it is compatible with aircraft brake seals and the old fluid MIL-H-5606G so you can simply drain the old and pour in the new.
However, I could not find it in quantities of less than 1 gallon, so you might want to go in with a few of your flying buddies. Its not that expensive running around $18.00 per gallon and a gallon will last me decades of flying time
