Subject: [FlyRotary] Howe "oil heat exchanger"- what a joke

Greetings,

I spent about half a day measuring my potential space for a real oil cooler, along with removing the plumbing from the heat exchangers in the radiator.  Once I got the lines off, I was able to look down into the port, and could see just how useless the heat exchangers are.  This link shows a picture of the "cool tube" that Howe sells for running lines:  http://www.howeracing.com/Radiators/Index-Coolers-CoolTube.htm   Imagine this tube turned inside out, so the inside has the fins, and the outside is smooth.  Best I can tell, the oil runs through the middle, and that's about it.  Utter crap.  All I was doing was making the oil dizzy having to run through both of these :-)

I looked at the space available, and can't fit the stock Mazda cooler anywhere easily.  I should be able to go with the Setrab cooler pretty easily though.  Now that I've done some measuring of the stock cooler, and since it's made much the same way as the Setrab, I should be able to figure out how the size of the stock unit compares to various Setrab sizes.  I'll shoot for something a little bigger than the stock Mazda unit, and give it a shot.

Cheers,
Rusty

Anyone remember who made the oil coolers that caused the inflight fires on the 20b pusher?
