Russell, Lynn Hanover has recommended Setrab oil coolers
to me and
others before, he uses them on his race car.

Hi Rick.
Thanks for the message.
I've spent
some time thinking about my options, and have decided to go with an air/oil
cooler. I would like to use one that could overlay the radiator, so I would
only need one air inlet for cooling. I would like to continue flying the
current ugly cowl for now, because I'm just not ready for a complete rebuild
of the whole front end at this point. I may also have to consider moving
for work in the near future, and would like to get the plane flying well
enough to fly off the time in case I need to fly it to a new home (hopefully
not).
I do like
the Setrab line of coolers. They offer lots of sizes, and fittings to use
any size oil line you want. I think I'll go ahead and give one of these
a try. Now, the real question. What size should I be looking at? The
best page I've found for sizes and descriptions is:
I'm thinking
of something along the lines of the STD640, 650, or 660. Are these about
the right size? Lynn?? Without any real guide for choosing a size, I'll
probably go with the largest one that will fit, and figure on using a thermostat
if it's too cool (fat chance). A large size will also let me think about
mounting it on the back side of the radiator, rather than on the front.
That will make plumbing easier for the time being, and will eventually let
me reduce the size of the radiator to help with cowl beautification.
I'd like
to get this cooler on order Monday, so I can start installing it next weekend.
If anyone can take a quick look at the size choices, I'll be happy to hear
all opinions.
Thanks,
Rusty (boiled
