Wish there was a simple answer, Greg
The majority (but, not all) of the RVs currently flying with a rotary engine start with the stock RV cowl. Mine for example used the standard duct inlets each side of the spinner, but I modified the bottom to provide an scoop for my oil cooler.(see attached photo) There is at least one fellow out in AZ that built a cowl that is functionally similar to the James Rotary Cowl with the intake under the spinner.
I think you really need to decide on your cooling configuration before you can reasonably think about what type cowling. If you decide on a single radiator hanging below the block then the James Rotary Cowl (or something like it) is probably a reasonable choice. If on the other hand, you decide to use two of the GM evaporator cores for radiators, then the stock cowl provides space behind each of the standard openings that serve well.
Best to look at a number of the photos on the Fly Rotary website and see the different configurations

Subject: [FlyRotary] Rotary cowl for RV8
Ladies & Gentlemen, I'm looking for opinions about which is the better cowl
to use for my RV8. The James rotary cowl, his lycoming cowl or the standard
Vans cowl. It appears I'll have to make the engine mount myself since
Conversion Concepts seem to be taking money without delivery so I can make
it to suite any of the above.
There is a lack of RV8s locally so I can't easily see the genuine Vans cowl
and I've only seen magazine pics of the James rotary cowl. So I ask you
which would be the better for a rotary installation.
George, as a matter of interest is the starter on your bell housing on the
side or underneath and does it fit the RX8 motor?
Thankyou
Greg
