I have an opportunity? to buy a 13b out of a wrecked 88 RX7.  What should I look for to be sure that the engine is rebuildable? (it is still in the car)

Hi Bill,

Ed did a good job, and I couldn't add anything to his list of things to grab.  I guess his wife is letting him spend more than 5 minutes a day on the computer now :-)

Any idea how many miles are on the engine? How long has it been sitting there not running?  If the answer is weeks or months, the seals are likely frozen in the grooves, and you won't be able to turn it over.  That won't stop it from being rebuildable, but it might lower the price.  If it's been sitting for a year or more, I'd be very worried about rust inside, particularly if the coolant is less than optimum, or partly drained.  That could easily make it a boat anchor.

I would say it's at least worth $200, because you can get all the little things you need, even if you end up replacing some or all of the housings.  You may very well want to swap some parts anyway, to end up with turbo housings and NA rotors.  If I thought it was a good engine, I might go as high as $500, but no more.

Good luck,
Rusty (OAT read 104 in my hanger, which is why I'm home working on the new intake in the air conditioned garage)
