Personally, I 'm partial to functional brakes - makes my whole day better. {:>).   The lesson I learned is the second I feel a mushy brake is to immediately assume total failure is imminent and shut down the engine.  Will only attempt to use the brake if certain disaster is looming, that way - hopefully - I will avoid creating a fireball of flaming hydraulic fluid.

Not a big deal until there is a crosswind and it weathercocks into the wind without a brake to compensate and you "groundloop" you trike and all the tailwheel guys come out of the wood work with smart A** comments.
