Manifold seals to the block around the insert.  There is a gap between the two on both sides of the port that functions as an air injection point (emissions stuff).

Bill, Ian, Dennis, and/or any other Renesis owner...

Have any of you taken off the exhaust mainfold. I was curious how
Mazda cast their manifold. The exhaust ports have that insert in them, but
the gasket seals to the block. My question is, is the manifold opening the
size of the gasket, or the size of the insert? There is 3/16 to a 1/4 inch
(just guessing as I am not at the hanger to measure) of insert inside the
exhaust port that will make a big difference in how big to make the prts
on my flange, and ultimately how big the exhaust runners are.
Ed Klepis is going to cut me an intake and exhaust flange, and given
the quality of the rest of his stuff, I anticipate it being very nice as
well. At any rate, he is going to machine them, so I would assume he would
or could make several of them, so If any of you are in need. Contact him,
I am sure he would be happy to help.
