I never met Paul but I feel like he was a friend and he will be missed as is Jim West which flew with me many times. From what we've heard from Ken Welter, in the past, the NTSB isn't necessarily interested in doing any more than filling in the boxes on the investigation form for experimentals.  They will be able to do a credible job of investigating the airframe, and some general info about the engine, such as whether it was running when it went down.  As in the past, they will likely have a local Mazda dealer inspect the engine, since they are the "experts".  
 
If requested, I would be willing to do what I can to inspect the engine, but I have to be honest about this.  I met Paul several times, and spoke with him a few more than that, and it would be painful for me to have to do this.  I just don't want to see the wreckage.  I almost flew over Saturday to surprise him, and just can't get over the fact that I can't do that now.
